Can You Keep a Credit Card When You File for Bankruptcy in Texas?

One of the most common questions we hear from clients is:

“If I have one credit card that’s in good standing, can I keep it when I file for bankruptcy?”

The short answer is no — you can’t choose to keep one card while discharging others. When you file for bankruptcy, you’re required to list all of your debts. It’s a full financial disclosure, meaning all credit cards, loans, and other debts must be included in your filing. You can’t pick and choose which unsecured debts (like credit cards) to include or exclude.

However, not all debts are treated the same. If you have secured loans — such as a car loan, mortgage, or furniture loan — you can usually keep those as long as you stay current on payments. Many clients reaffirm these types of debts, but in Texas, even if you don’t, you often can continue making payments and keep your property if it’s considered exempt under state law.

Now, here’s some good news: after your bankruptcy is discharged, you can begin rebuilding your credit quickly. Many clients tell us they start receiving credit card offers almost immediately after discharge — sometimes within days. Responsible use of new credit can help you rebuild your financial stability faster than you might expect.

At Shuster Law Firm, we’re here to make the bankruptcy process simple, clear, and stress-free — helping Texans protect what matters and move forward with confidence.
